Edwin Day (b.
1951) is the current Legislator for District 5 (
New City-Haverstraw) in
Rockland County,
New York.
Ed was born in
Brooklyn, New York to Edwin and Jane Day. He worked in sales and as a packaging engineer prior to joining the
New York City Police Department in 1979. Highly decorated, he rose through the ranks to the position of
Lieutenant - Commander of
Detectives, retiring from the NYPD in 2000. Following that, he served as Corporate Director of Security for Phipps Houses, Inc, from 2000-2002, was appointed Chief of Detectives for the city of
Baltimore in 2003, and is presently a Senior Security Consultant for a major New York City security systems firm. Elected County Legislator in his first run for public office over the appointed incumbent, Kenneth Zebrowski, Jr, in 2005, was reelected by an overwhelming margin in November 2007 to his first full term, and was also elected as the Minority Leader for the Rockland County Legislature. He serves as a member of the Public Safety, Planning and Public Works, and Economic Development Committees.

Community Involvement
Since moving to New City in 1983, Ed has been very active in the community life, with a special focus on child safety and neighborhood unity. Amongst many other things, he served as president of the Little Tor Neighborhood Association from 1997-2003, helping to reconstitute and revitalize the nearly defunct organization, and currently serves as an advisor to the Association.
From 2003-2005, he held the position of co-president of the
Clarkstown North High School Fourth Quarter Club, the football team’s parent group, and was instrumental in pushing for the two high schools’ teams to remain independent and expanding the Clarkstown North program.
He has actively coached youth sports since 1991, from
Pop Warner Football for the New City Rams to Town of Clarkstown Recreational Basketball and Baseball to New City
Little League. As such, Ed is a member and certified Youth Coach of the National Youth Sports Coaches Association (NYSCA), and still coaches youth baseball (New City Senior League) and football (New City Rams).
A
PTA member for nearly twenty years, he also served as a delegate to the PTA Legislative Conference on
Megan’s Law in 1995 and as the PTA Health and Safety Chairperson for Little Tor Elementary and Felix Festa Middle School from 1994-2000. Further, Ed employed his law enforcement experience in creating and facilitating a PTA Child Personal Safety Course pilot project that eventually became school curriculum in 1995, and continued to utilize his expertise in serving as facilitator for the PTA School Bus Safety and Digital Imaging Print programs at Little Tor Elementary.
Finally, Ed has served on numerous boards in the Town of
Clarkstown. He was a member of the Ad Hoc Committee for the Town Comprehensive Plan, part of the Planning Board, from 1999-2000. He was also a member of the Open Space committee in 2000, the Community Task Force for Youth Drug Abuse Prevention, the Citizens Advisory Board, and the Clarkstown Central School District’s Abduction Prevention and Health Curriculum Committees in 1996 and 1994, respectively. He is presently serving on the New City Vision Committee, which is ensuring a timely development of the hamlet that's responsive to the needs of local citizens and business, and also is a board member for Big Brothers Big Sisters, ARC of Rockland Foundation, and the Rockland County Police Hispanic Society.

Ed has sponsored and co-sponsored numerous pieces of legislation and resolutions since his election. Some examples include legislation that:
Created “Sex Offender Free Zones” around schools and other areas, in order to keep predatory sex offenders from living, working, or loitering in these areas, and allowing police to intercede and stop known sex offenders from victimizing children.
Streamlined publication of government information in order to save money
Exempted county volunteer emergency personnel from the county sales tax
Capped spending on public arts projects while establishing preference for local artists
Eliminated the statute of limitations on rape and violent sexual crime
Reformed the Campaign Finance Laws in the County
Increased public transportation funding
Strengthened Consumer Protection Laws

Family
Ed has been married to his wife, Jean, since 1981. She currently works as a teaching assistant at Laurel Plains Elementary in New City, and is a past PTA president at Little Tor Elementary, past co-president of the Clarkstown North Football Fourth Quarter Club, and recipient of the PTA Lifetime Achievement Award.
Ed has two sons, both born in Rockland County and Clarkstown North High School graduates. His elder son, Christopher, is a graduate of Yale University and a 2nd Lieutenant in the US Army Infantry. He transferred into Yale in 2005 after graduating the Rockland Community College MTS Honors program, and is married to the former Jennifer Henry of New City. Ed's younger son, Michael, is a junior at Iona College in New Rochelle.
